General Information The karate system known as “Uechi-ryu” is named after Uechi Kanbun (1877 – 1948), an Okinawan who studied martial arts in China. After his death, his eldest son Uechi Kanei refined and added to the system. Also under the tutelage of Kanei, the style grew and spread on the island of Okinawa, as well as throughout the world. Uechi-ryu is different from other karate systems in its application of effective, common sense techniques. The style is not geared towards sport karate. The stances are protective and the movements are simple. Because Uechi-ryu was founded on the principle of “half-hard & half-soft”, there are soft blocks with hard punches. Unlike most other Okinawan and Japanese martial arts, Uechi-ryu remains very true to its original southern Chinese ancestry. Uechi Ryu is best characterized by the practice of ‘Sanchin.’ Sanchin develops proper breathing, mental focus, dynamic strength, and powerful movement. The style also uses unique hand and foot techniques. Blocks are primarily done with open hands and multiple hand techniques are used aside from the typical use of the fist. |
